Spiritual Direction

”… and after the fire came a gentle whisper.” (1 Kings 19:12b).

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is a process for the care, growth and formation of our souls. It is uniquely spiritual as it centred on the activity of God in our lives. It is called direction not in a therapeutic sense, but rather as one person companioning another through life’s journey. A spiritual director is someone who notices the activity of God in the life of another. A spiritual director is a companion; it is the Holy Spirit who is the director of the process.

Spiritual direction can help people view the world differently. Today, we’re stimulated by various ideas and thoughts likened to visiting a supermarket. In a supermarket ‘I choose’. In spiritual direction we notice what it is like to ‘be chosen.’ Spiritual companionship can assist us move from a consumer mindset to being a friend and lover of humanity and God.

Spiritual direction is not counseling or therapy. Rather it is a process built on mindfulness, conversation and openness.

What are you noticing in your life at the moment that you’d like to explore with a spiritual director? To unpack this question we may need a safe and listening companion to journey with.
